Hollywood’s ‘woke’ up call
Hollywood has largely been the preserve of the white male. However, the scene is slowly shifting as the American film industry embraces diversity like never before. The runaway success of such films as “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” is a good case in point.
The rising trend brought cautious optimism, as USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism recently released a study on 1,200 popular films from 2007 to 2018, highlighting both gains in diversity and long-standing inequalities.
Among the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2018, according to the survey, 39 featured a female lead or co-lead, as opposed to 33 in 2017. The number of films with a person of color driving the plot rose from 21 in 2017 to 27 last year; 11 of them had a female protagonist, compared to just four in the year before.
Be that as it may, it’s not all Christmassy in the tinsel town. The survey found women were three times more likely to have a nude scene than males, and only 1.3% of characters in 2018’s top 100 box-office hits were from the LGBT community.
Ironically, Adele Lim, a Chinese Malaysian and cowriter of “Crazy Rich Asians”, said last week that she was leaving the crew because of pay disparity between her and the white male cowriter.
