No, hard work is not the answer
Practice alone doesn’t always make someone an expert, according to the latest study published in Royal Society Open Science.
After interviewing three groups of 13 violinists ranked by skill levels, psychologists in Case Western Reserve University found that the less accomplished of them practiced about 6,000 hours on average by the age of 20, a number expectedly less than that of their peers crowned as good and best. Devoting equally around 11,000 hours to training, those two elite categories yet fail to justify the legitimacy of practice in making virtuosos.
Overall, the number of hours is responsible for roughly a quarter of the skills difference amongst the three ranks, the researchers said.
The study partly reprised a 1993 study that teased out the correlation between practice time and musical ability, which originally planted the seed of 10,000 hours rule, a term popularized by bestseller author Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 book Outliers.
Gladwell called 10,000 hours the ‘magic number of greatness’. Such conclusions downplayed the social obsession with natural talent and pegged hard work as the major ingredient of genius.
“The idea has become really entrenched in our culture, but it’s an oversimplification,” said Brooke Macnamara, the first author of the recent study.
