Devoting equally around 11,000 hours to training, those two elite categories yet fail to justify the legitimacy of practice in making virtuosos. Overall, the number of hours is responsible for roughly a quarter of the skills difference amongst the three ranks, the researchers said. The study partly reprised a 1993 study that teased out the correlation between practice time and musical ability, which originally planted the seed of 10,000 hours rule, a term popularized by bestseller author Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 book Outliers. Gladwell called 10,000 hours the ‘magic number of greatness’.
