The Noto Earthquake in Japan
On New Year’s Day, a powerful earthquake happened in the Noto Peninsula in western Japan. Some areas of the Noto Peninsula were lifted as much as 13 feet, around 84,000 homes damaged and a total of 14,000 people directly affected. Sadly, 281 people were killed with more seriously injured.
Floods in Spain
On October 29, a large amount of rainfall hit Valencia of Spain and the surrounding towns were flooded. A total of 216 people died, half of whom were over the age of 70. The heavy rain turned streets into rivers, and cars were tossed around as if they were toys. To make it worse, after the flood, public anger over the lack of warning and the poor response from rescue services erupted into strikes (
罢工
).
Hurricane Helene in the United States
Hurricane Helene formed on September 24 and quickly strengthened, becoming the strongest to affect the area. As it moved across the southeastern states of the United States, including Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama, it left behind a trail of destruction and caused severe flooding, taking away more than 230 people’s lives.
