The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures showing the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210-209 BC with the purpose of protecting him in his afterlife. The Terracotta Army was discovered in Lintong County, Shaanxi, on 29 March 1974.
History
The construction of the tomb began in 246 BC, soon after Ying Zheng (then aged 13) succeeded his father as King of Qin, and the project eventually involved 700,000 workers. Sima Qian wrote that Qin Shi Huang was buried with palaces, towers, valuable artifacts and wondrous objects.
Terracotta figures
The terracotta figures are life-sized, typically ranging from 175 cm to about 200 cm (the officers are typically taller). They vary in height, uniform and hairstyle in accordance with rank. The figures are of these general types:
The quantity of infantry warriors (
步兵俑
) is the most in the three pits of Terracotta Army, around 7,000 pieces unearthed. According to their diverse headwear, dressing styles and shoes, people can recognize their status easily.
Each cavalry warrior (
骑兵俑
) stands in front of its horse. Both of the warriors and horses are life-sized. These vivid cavalry figures and horses are the real reflection of the cavalry image of the Qin Dynasty.
The kneeling archers wear long robes covered with armor and squared shoes. Several kneeling archers found in pit 2 are the best-preserved and attract lots of tourists for their incredible colorful appearance with black hair, pink faces, vermilion headbands, powdery green coat armors, sky-blue and pink leg guards.
